A police operation in Mukono District has led to the arrest of a man suspected of orchestrating a series of motorcycle robberies targeting boda boda riders in and around Kasawo Sub-county.
The suspect, identified as Julius Kyeyune, commonly known as Kavuma, was arrested on June 20, 2026, during an operation conducted by police in Kakira Village, Kasawo Sub-county.
Police believe the suspect used a deceptive method to lure boda boda riders before robbing them of their motorcycles.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala, investigations suggest that Kyeyune would travel to areas outside Kasawo and hire motorcycle riders under the pretext of seeking transport services.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect would travel to locations outside Kasawo and pose as a passenger seeking transportation to Kasawo,” Kawala said.
She explained that after arriving in Kasawo, the suspect would allegedly direct the riders to remote sections of Kakira Village, especially around the vast sugarcane plantations, where he would carry out the robberies.
Police say the operation that led to his arrest was intelligence-led and culminated in a search of his residence.
During the search, officers recovered a range of items believed to be connected to criminal activities, including housebreaking tools such as metal bars, cutters, pangas, motorcycle spare parts, and other equipment.
Investigators also recovered motorcycle number plate UGB 722Q, which police suspect belongs to a motorcycle whose ownership has not yet been established.
In addition, officers found helmets, metal materials suspected to be used in the manufacture of forged number plates, several mobile phones, old motorcycle inner tubes, jackets, and two driving permits.
Police further recovered two rounds of AK-47 ammunition, a discovery that has prompted investigators to widen the scope of their inquiries.
“The recovered exhibits have been secured to aid ongoing investigations. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other suspects believed to be connected to the criminal activities,” Kawala said.
Police have since launched efforts to trace potential victims and establish whether the recovered items are linked to other reported robbery incidents in the area.
Authorities have urged members of the public who may have lost motorcycles under similar circumstances to cooperate with investigators as inquiries continue.
