Lawyer Erias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola’s  victory in securing the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket may seem like a major political breakthrough, but analysts suggest it is more of a probationary period than a guaranteed path to the 2026 general elections.

Following the passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, NUP found itself at a crossroads in selecting the right candidate to carry the party’s flag for the remaining months of the current term.

Nalukoola emerged victorious in the race for the ticket, but his selection has sparked mixed reactions within the party and among supporters.

Many NUP leaders and grassroots supporters had thrown their weight behind Magala Umar, whom they believe has a deeper connection with the constituency.

On the ground, Magala is seen as a more familiar figure, having spent years engaging directly with the electorate and known for his loyalty to the party as a foot soldier.

Some supporters argue that while Nalukoola has legal expertise and political experience, Magala’s local influence might have made him the stronger candidate.

Analysts suggest that NUP’s decision to endorse Nalukoola is a strategic move to observe his performance over the remaining months of the late Ssegirinya’s tenure.

They believe that this period will act as a test to determine whether he can effectively represent the party and serve the interests of the people. If he proves himself, he could secure the party’s full backing in the 2026 general elections.

Others  believe that if Nalukoola fails to meet expectations, NUP may reconsider its decision and throw its support behind another candidate possibly Magala Umar or another strong contender.

As the political landscape evolves, all eyes will be on Nalukoola to see if he can rise to the occasion and justify the party’s trust in him.

Nalukoola’s victory faced opposition not only from some Kawempe North residents and political analysts but also from his fellow contestants in the race for the party card.

This was evident when Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba declared his independent candidacy, disregarding the party president’s directive for all candidates to unite behind the winner.

However, Nalukoola’s experience in Uganda’s political landscape, having handled numerous cases involving opposition political figures, along with his down-to-earth character, makes him a strong party representative for the seat.
