Just a day after his coronation, the new Omukama of Tooro, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has launched a five-day Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign in the kingdom, urging parents and caregivers to ensure that eligible children receive the vaccine.
The campaign was launched on Thursday at Karuziika Palace, with health authorities targeting children aged nine months to below five years.
The Omukama led the vaccination exercise alongside his wife, Omugo Rebecca Amoding, Musuuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki, and officials from the Ministry of Health and Tooro Kingdom.
Speaking at the launch, Nyabongo I called on parents across Uganda to take advantage of the campaign and protect their children against measles and rubella, both of which are highly infectious diseases.
“I urge all parents to take action and be involved in this Measles-Rubella vaccination,” the Omukama said.
The King said a healthy and energetic young population is essential for the country’s development, pledging to work with the government, particularly the Ministry of Health, to promote public health in Tooro.
“We promise to work with government, especially the Ministry of Health, to go about Measles-Rubella and also other diseases that adults face. The Kingdom will take part in the fight against these diseases,” he said.
Musuuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki commended the King for prioritising public health immediately after his installation on September 29, 2026.
“The King wants to rule over a healthy and productive population. By launching this campaign, His Majesty fulfills the vital health commitments he made during his coronation,” Kamurasi said.
The Ministry of Health launched the national Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign as part of efforts to reduce the burden of the diseases among children.
The five-day exercise runs from October 1 to 5, 2026, and targets 7.5 million children aged nine months to below five years across Uganda.
