Police at Kajansi are holding two suspects in connection with the death of a nine-month-old baby who was allegedly thrown into a pit latrine at Kigo-Lunya, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District.

The deceased has been identified as Jeremiah Anakeleti Mugisha, a nine-month-old boy.

The suspects are Irene Nakalanzi, 19, the child’s mother and a resident of Kigo-Lunya, and Joseph Segimana, 37, the child’s father, a chapati maker and resident of the same area.

According to preliminary police investigations, the two suspects are the biological parents of the deceased and had reportedly been experiencing domestic misunderstandings.

Police said Segimana had allegedly abandoned the family and relocated to a nearby area, where he reportedly began living with another woman.

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, the couple reportedly had a disagreement during which Segimana removed his belongings from the family home.

He allegedly told Nakalanzi that he was at a bus terminal in Kampala and invited her to meet him there. However, he reportedly returned to the family home while she was away, collected his belongings and relocated them to his new residence.

Police allege that the incident angered Nakalanzi, who subsequently threw her nine-month-old son into a pit latrine estimated to be about 50 feet deep.

She allegedly attempted to conceal the incident by claiming that the child’s father had taken the baby and disappeared to an unknown location.

On October 7, 2026, at about 3pm, Nakalanzi was brought to Kajansi Police Station by LC1 officials to report the alleged disappearance of her child.

During questioning, she reportedly confessed to having thrown the child into the pit latrine on October 4.

On October 8, Police Fire Brigade personnel recovered the body of the deceased from the pit latrine.

The body was conveyed to Mulago Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala condemned the incident and called for peaceful resolution of domestic disputes.

“We strongly condemn such acts of violence and call upon couples and families experiencing domestic grievances to seek peaceful and amicable ways of resolving their differences,” she said.

Kawala also encouraged members of the public to seek assistance from relevant authorities, community leaders and other appropriate support services rather than resorting to violence.
