Police has called for calm and greater public cooperation following growing concerns over crime across the country.
Addressing the concerns, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke acknowledged public anxiety over recent criminal incidents but assured Ugandans that security agencies are actively responding and registering significant successes.
“There are recent concerns over crimes around the country. We mind about people’s concerns because we are the custodians of their peace,” Rusoke said.
He noted that several incidents reported directly to police and others highlighted on social media platforms have prompted swift responses from law enforcement.
“Several incidents that have been reported to police or through social media platforms have consequently prompted police to respond and even register success,” he stated.
However, Rusoke revealed that police have made major progress in combating aggravated robberies, particularly within the Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area.
“Between 20th and 24th January 2026, we recovered four SMGs in KMP and arrested nine suspects. Since then, armed robberies have gone silent. Preliminary investigations place those guns on more than twelve scenes of crime,” he said.
He added that intensified disruptive operations have led to hundreds of arrests targeting suspected criminals.
“From the 3rd of this month to date, we have made over 440 arrests of suspected muggers, burglars, and consumers of narcotics. We have screened them and taken the majority to court,” Rusoke explained.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that investigators have made significant breakthroughs in several high-profile murder cases from recent years after arresting key suspects and developing strong leads.
These include: The murder of a socialite in Kyanja, the murder of a director at UCU, the murder of two individuals at a hotel in Lungujja
“We have made breakthroughs in several murders of recent years by arresting suspects with good leads,” Rusoke said.
Rusoke urged members of the public to remain calm and maintain close contact with police through established communication channels.
“Our appeal is for the people to stay calm and maintain contact with the police. Have our contacts, both the hotlines at our command centers and the telephone contacts at the various police stations in your neighborhoods,” he said.
