Police in Kampala are searching for a man captured in a now-viral TikTok video sitting atop a moving taxi while casually sipping beer along a busy road.
The dangerous stunt, which unfolded along one of the city’s main streets, has sparked public concern and prompted swift action from law enforcement.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the vehicle involved has since been traced and impounded, and its driver charged with carrying a passenger in a dangerous position.
“We managed to trace the vehicle carrying someone on top of its bed. It was impounded, and the driver was charged. However, the passenger has not yet been traced, but efforts to locate him are ongoing,” said Owoyesigyire.
Police confirmed that the incident was staged for TikTok content, revealing that the man had paid the driver to perform the stunt.
“This is very dangerous, lads. We understand that the TikToker paid the driver for that stunt,” Owoyesigyire added, cautioning the public against risking lives for social media attention.
This latest act of digital recklessness comes just weeks after another controversial TikTok stunt, in which a man — in a bid to promote his bar and restaurant — staged a fake panga attack on diners. That video also went viral, prompting police to arrest those involved.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to enforcing public safety and cracking down on social media stunts that pose risks to lives and breach public order.
