Security has been tightened around the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom headquarters and other Kingdom properties following information that unknown individuals were allegedly planning an attack on Kingdom facilities.
UG BULLETIN has learnt that the road leading to the palace, known as Orukurato, has been sealed off by police officers.
In an official statement, the Kingdom said the deployment was carried out by relevant security agencies as a precautionary measure to safeguard its assets, officials and the general public.
“Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom has received a security briefing indicating that unknown individuals were allegedly planning an attack on Kingdom facilities,” said Omuhikirwa Andrew Byakutaga Ateenyi.
“Following their assessment, the relevant security agencies have deployed personnel around the Kingdom’s properties as a precautionary measure to safeguard the Kingdom’s assets, officials, and the general public,” he added.
The Kingdom commended the security agencies for their vigilance and commitment to protecting its properties and officials.
The deployment comes amid a deepening leadership dispute between Omuhikirwa Byakutaga and the Babiito, the royal clan led by Chief Prince (Okwir) Fred Mugenyi Rucunya.
The Babiito recently gave Byakutaga a two-week ultimatum to resign and apologise, accusing him of overstaying his tenure.
The dispute has intensified following the illness of Omukama Rukirabasaija Gafabusa Solomon Iguru.
The Babiito, led by the Okwir, have maintained that they are responsible for overseeing the Kingdom’s operations when the Omukama is unable to actively preside over Kingdom affairs, rather than the Omuhikirwa.
Despite the leadership tensions, the Kingdom has assured the public that its offices remain open and accessible.
“We wish to assure the general public that all Kingdom offices remain open and accessible to the public and continue to operate normally,” Byakutaga said.
