Seven people have been confirmed dead after a boat in which they were travelling capsized on Lake Kyoga near Kiryanga Village, Acii Sub-County in Amolatar district.
According to police, the accident happened at around 11:00 a.m. when a boat carrying 36 passengers hit a stationary tree stump about 400 meters from the Kiryanga landing site.
Twenty-nine people survived the tragedy.
“The boat was travelling from Muchora Abino A Village to escort a catechist attending a burial ceremony at Kiryanga Village when the engine boat hit a stationary tree stump, causing it to capsize,” police said in a statement.
The deceased have been identified as Steven Odeke, 65, LC1 Chairperson of Muchora Abino A Village, Amolatar District; Catherine Aguti, 55, from Dokolo District; Sylvia Abonyo, 35, from Soroti District; Ogwal Jaspher, 38, from Amolatar District; Robina Ejang, 30, from Amolatar Town Council; and Agwech Semmy, 20, from Amolatar District. One other male adult remains unidentified.
Police confirmed the bodies were taken to Amolatar Health Centre IV mortuary for post-mortem
