Soroti University has temporarily closed its Shs1.2 billion main gate after defects caused granite and stone cladding on the gate arch to separate and fall, posing a safety risk to people and property.
The gate, which was commissioned on September 25, 2026, has been closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic to allow remedial works to be carried out.
In a memo dated October 14, 2026, the university’s Directorate of Estates and Works said the defects involved the “debonding and falling of granite/stone cladding from the gate arch”.
“This poses a significant risk to human life and property,” the university management said.
According to the memo, the decision to close the gate was reached following consultations with the contractor responsible for the construction works.
“Following consultation and engagement with the Contractor, the Main Gate shall be temporarily closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic with immediate effect to facilitate correction of the defect,” the memo reads.
The contractor is expected to undertake remedial works during the closure to address the defects and ensure the gate is safe for use.
The university management said the gate would only be reopened after the works are completed and its technical personnel have confirmed that the identified defects have been rectified.
“All staff, students, visitors and other road users are requested to use the previous alternative access route during this period and to observe all safety instructions,” the memo states.
The university apologised for the inconvenience caused by the closure, emphasising that the safety of the university community remains a priority.
“We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation as we prioritise the safety of the University community,” management said.
The closure comes less than a month after the gate was commissioned, with the university yet to announce when it will reopen.
