President Yoweri Museveni has granted an official burial to celebrated Ugandan playwright and theatre practitioner Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu.
The development was announced by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda, who said the government had begun working with Mukulu’s family through the National Organising Committee (NOC) to prepare for his burial on Thursday, August 20, 2026, in Kijabijjo, Gayaza.
“I wish to inform you that the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Gen. Museveni, has granted an official burial to the fallen statesman, Mr. Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu. Accordingly, the N.O.C. is engaging with the bereaved family to organise a befitting send-off on August 20, 2026, in Kijabijjo, Gayaza,” Babalanda said.
She extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues in the performing arts industry and all Ugandans mourning the veteran dramatist.
“Our deepest condolences go to the family, friends, colleagues in the Performing Arts Industry, and Ugandans at large. May the soul of Alex Mukulu rest in eternal peace,” she added.
Mukulu died on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the age of 72. He was one of Uganda’s most celebrated playwrights and theatre practitioners, whose work shaped the country’s performing arts industry for decades.
His body was taken to the Uganda National Theatre on Tuesday for public viewing. On Wednesday, it will be moved to Namirembe Cathedral for a funeral service before he is laid to rest on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at his ancestral home in Kijabijjo, Gayaza.
