The NRM vice chairperson for Eastern Uganda, Cap Mike Mukula has come out to clear the air on reports that Speaker Anita Among equated President Museveni to God.
It was reported on Monday that while addressing a rally in Kyazanga, Among, who is seeking to become the NRM second national vice chairman equated President Museveni and his son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to God and the voters as the holy spirit.
The statement has elicited criticism against the speaker.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, Mukula said the reports were a deliberate misrepresentation of the remarks by the speaker, noting that the coverage of the same was “misleading and sensational.”
“We categorically reject this distortion as a blatant misrepresentation of her remarks and a deliberate attempt to provoke public misunderstanding and mischaracterize her deep appreciation of the President’s leadership,” Mukula said.
The NRM vice chairperson for Eastern Uganda said Speaker Among’s comments were made as a figurative expression of gratitude for President Museveni’s leadership and contributions to Uganda’s peace, stability, and socio-economic development and not a theological statement or an attempt to deify the President.
“At no point did she equate the Head of State to the divine or make any theological declaration,” Mukula emphasized.
“Her words, taken in context, were clearly figurative and meant to highlight the President’s unparalleled legacy and service to the nation. While we respect freedom of the press, it must be exercised with integrity and factual accuracy. Uganda’s political discourse must remain rooted in truth, civility, and national interest,” Mukula warned.
Calling for a correction, Mukula said the NRM fraternity expects media houses to avoid sensationalism and focus instead on reporting issues that genuinely impact Ugandans.
The development comes at a time when the election fever has risen and any statement made by politicians is scrutinized by the voters.
