Security forces in Lamwo District have arrested two individuals and recovered an illegal firearm in a coordinated operation conducted by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Uganda Police Force.
The operation took place on Friday morning, August 1, 2025, at around 10:00 a.m. at the Waligo Checkpoint near the Uganda–South Sudan border.
The suspects were intercepted while attempting to cross into South Sudan.
The primary suspect, 27-year-old Okunga Isaac, a resident of Akor Village in Lira District, was found in possession of a submachine gun (SMG) bearing serial number 25456, along with a magazine containing five rounds of live ammunition.
Okunga was riding on a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEY 428G, which was being operated by Lokoroma Gabriel, a resident of Pobel Village in Lamwo Town Council.
According to UPDF, the two suspects were immediately apprehended and are currently being held at Bravo Battalion Headquarters in Ngomoromo.
They will be handed over to police authorities for further investigations and prosecution.
The arrest is part of ongoing joint security efforts to crack down on illegal firearms and cross-border criminal activities.
Authorities say such operations are playing a key role in improving security and stability along the Uganda–South Sudan frontier.
