A quiet holiday visit ended in tragedy after a landslide claimed the lives of two young girls in Kisoro District.
The incident happened early Sunday morning at around 5 a.m. in Nyabiyonga Village, Murora Sub-county, Kibumba parish when soil from a nearby hill collapsed onto a house where the victims were sleeping.
The deceased have been identified as Brenda Musoni, 14, and Eseri Mujawimana , 12. The two pupils had reportedly traveled to spend their school holidays with their grandparents.
During the incident, their grandparents, Benon Mulema, 70, and Mbaboneye Avelina, 60, were also inside the house and sustained injuries.
According to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the landslide partially buried the house, trapping the occupants. The two girls died after being suffocated by the debris.
Police, working with local residents, rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve the bodies. The injured were rescued and taken for medical attention.
Authorities say the area is prone to landslides, especially during heavy rains, and have urged residents living in such areas to take extra precautions.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of communities living in mountainous areas during the rainy season.
