At least 13 people narrowly survived death on Tuesday afternoon after a taxi they were travelling in plunged into River Nyagak in .
The crash occurred at around 12:45pm at Nyagak River and involved a drone taxi, registration number UBJ 956G, which was en route from Hoima to Alangi in Zombo.
Confirming the incident, Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the accident happened after the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
“It is alleged that upon reaching River Nyagak, the driver who was travelling from Hoima to Alangi failed to brake while speeding, lost control of the vehicle and plunged into the river,” SP Rusoke said.
All 13 occupants of the taxi, including the driver, sustained injuries in the crash. Police confirmed that two victims suffered serious injuries, while 11 others sustained minor injuries.
“They were all rescued and rushed for medical attention. Two of the victims sustained serious injuries while the rest suffered minor injuries,” SP Rusoke added.
Traffic police have since reminded motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution, especially when approaching bridges and river crossings.
“Speeding significantly reduces reaction time and increases the risk of severe crashes. Observing speed limits and driving cautiously can prevent such incidents and save lives,” he emphasized.
