As Uganda prepares to commemorate Martyrs’ Day on June 3, 2025, at Namugongo, the Uganda Police Force has rolled out a series of safety guidelines aimed at protecting the thousands of pilgrims walking to the holy site.

Many faithful have already embarked on their spiritual journey from different parts of the country, prompting heightened traffic coordination efforts by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.

SP Micheal Kananura, the Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, emphasized that police have started escorting pilgrims and coordinating handovers to officers at designated points along key routes.

“We have deployed teams to ensure the safety of all pilgrims. Our officers are working closely with group leaders to offer safe passage and manage traffic flow,” said SP Kananura.

He urged pilgrims to walk in organized groups for easier coordination and security. “We advise pilgrims to wear reflective jackets, especially during the night, to enhance visibility. They should always walk on the right-hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic and only cross at safe points,” he added.

Motorists, too, have been urged to exercise extra caution during this pilgrimage period.

“We remind all motorists to observe speed limits, particularly in areas where pilgrims are walking. Avoid reckless overtaking, especially near crowds, on narrow roads, corners, or hills. Drunk driving must be avoided at all costs,” SP Kananura warned.

He further called for respect for pedestrian walkways and urged drivers to give right of way to pilgrims and other road users.

In case of emergencies, the public has been encouraged to reach out to the police via toll-free numbers: 0800 199 099 or 0779 999 999.

SP Kananura concluded with a call for collective responsibility: “Let us all play our part in ensuring this sacred journey is safe and peaceful. The Uganda Police remains committed to providing security and support to all pilgrims heading to Namugongo.”

Martyrs’ Day remains one of Uganda’s most significant religious events, drawing multitudes from across the country and beyond. With proper coordination and adherence to safety measures, authorities hope for a smooth and incident-free celebration.
