Brig. Gen. John Bosco Asinguza has been appointed the new Deputy Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The appointment was made by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Brig. Gen. Asinguza previously served as the commander of Special Forces Group One. He takes over the position of Deputy Commander following the elevation of Maj. Gen. Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru, who was recently appointed Commander of the SFC.
Earlier this year, Brig. Gen. Asinguza gained prominence after successfully leading the military parade during President Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony for his seventh consecutive five-year term at the Kololo Independence Grounds.
The SFC is an elite service of the UPDF responsible for the security of the President of Uganda and members of the First Family. It is also tasked with conducting specialized and high-risk military operations at short notice, carrying out special operations on behalf of the Ugandan military, and protecting key strategic installations across the country.
Following the gazetting of the UPDF Establishment in 2024, the SFC was elevated from a unit to a full military service. It now operates alongside the Land Force, Air Force and Reserve Force as one of the four services that make up the UPDF.
The Land Force is responsible for ground-based military operations, territorial defence and infantry deployments, while the Air Force handles aerial surveillance, air defence and air-to-ground support operations. The SFC focuses on specialized, high-risk military tasks and strategic security, while the Reserve Force provides additional manpower through auxiliary units, retired personnel and recalled reservists.
