Magogo re-elected as FUFA president, sets bold agenda for Ugandan football

Moses Hassim Magogo has been re-elected as President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), extending his leadership for another four-year term, running from 2025 to 2029.

His re-election was confirmed during FUFA’s 101st Annual General Assembly, held on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at the Hoima Resort Hotel in Hoima City. Magogo, who ran unopposed, secured his third consecutive term, having first assumed the position in 2013.

In his acceptance speech, Magogo laid out an ambitious vision for the future of Ugandan football, with a focus on advancing technical development, strengthening the football business, and preparing for Uganda’s role as co-host of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

He commended the efforts of all stakeholders—both local and international—for their continued support in advancing the game, and he called for unity and collaboration to drive the sport forward.

“I sincerely thank all stakeholders for the unwavering support towards football development. Our journey has been driven by passion, dedication, and consistent investment in technical expertise,” Magogo said.

He noted that over the past decade, FUFA has undergone a remarkable transformation, shifting from an organization once seen as struggling to one that now commands respect within Africa.

“In 2013, some targets appeared impossible. Today, they are basic expectations. Our progress has been shaped by our growing knowledge, training, and commitment,” he said.

While celebrating these achievements, Magogo acknowledged that serious challenges persist—particularly financial constraints that limit the competitiveness and sustainability of Ugandan football clubs. He stressed the need for greater investment to ensure long-term success, particularly as infrastructure across the country improves.

“Our priority now is to professionalize and commercialize the game further. Club football urgently needs increased revenue to compete globally. The current infrastructure improvements give us an opportunity to attract greater investment,” he noted.

Magogo also unveiled his strategic plan for the 2025–2029 term, focusing on technical development through the FUFA Master Plan, building football as a strong business and brand, fully capitalizing on AFCON 2027 co-hosting opportunities, deepening engagement with stakeholders, and consolidating the achievements made during his previous terms.

He cautioned against complacency and called for honesty, discipline, and integrity in tackling systemic challenges that continue to hinder the game.

“We must face issues such as limited resources, mindset shifts, and ethical challenges with honesty and resolve. Football must be guided by integrity and professionalism,” Magogo emphasized.

Reflecting on his 12 years at the helm, Magogo spoke about his personal sacrifices, revealing how much of his private and professional life he has dedicated to football. He reaffirmed his passion for the game and his determination to continue working toward its advancement.

“I have devoted myself to football, often at great personal cost. But my passion remains strong, and I am eager to continue with your support to drive meaningful progress,” he said.

As he embarks on a new term, Magogo urged all football stakeholders to embrace collaboration, focus on results, and unite in the shared goal of building a stronger, more competitive Ugandan football landscape.

“With unity and determination, we can unlock the full potential of Ugandan football and build a stronger, more competitive future.”
