Uganda Airlines has launched its first-ever direct flight to London Gatwick, marking a historic milestone in the country’s aviation and economic landscape.
The inaugural flight took off from Entebbe International Airport in a momentous event witnessed by the Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, representatives from the United Kingdom, and other dignitaries.
This is the first direct commercial flight between Uganda and the United Kingdom since October 2015, and it signifies far more than just the resumption of a route it represents a new era of enhanced trade, tourism, and investment opportunities between the two nations.
Uganda Airlines CEO, Jenifer Bamuturaki, celebrated the launch as a breakthrough in the airline’s strategic ambitions and a commitment to modern, sustainable aviation.
“We are proud to be the first carrier to operate the Airbus A330-800neo into London Gatwick and even prouder that this flight symbolises our commitment to sustainable aviation,” she said.
“With today’s departure, we officially transition from our establishment phase into a new chapter of long-term growth and expansion.”
The new route will ease travel for tourists seeking to explore Uganda’s rich natural and cultural heritage, making the country’s renowned destinations more accessible and affordable.
For exporters, the direct connection to London offers a streamlined, cost-effective channel to one of the world’s largest markets, enhancing efficiency and global competitiveness.
The route is also expected to strengthen bilateral ties by facilitating faster engagement between investors, business communities, and policymakers in both countries, reinforcing Uganda’s strategic partnership with the UK to drive inclusive economic growth.
The Works and Transport Minister said the flight will further enhance ties between UK and Uganda.
“This is more than a flight—it is a bridge for business, investment, and people-to-people connections. Today’s launch brings us closer to realising President Museveni’s vision of direct air links that reduce travel time and open Uganda to the world,” he said.
The inaugural flight departed Entebbe at 10:16 AM local time and will land at Gatwick at 4:55 PM UK time.
London becomes the 17th international destination served by Uganda Airlines and the longest route in its expanding network, further cementing its role as a key player in regional and global aviation.
The national carrier will operate four weekly non-stop flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays as Uganda Airlines seeks to tap into UK markets but also takes a significant step towards expanding its international network.
