The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has unveiled a new-look Central Executive Committee (CEC) following elections held during the party’s national delegates conference.
The CEC, NRM’s topmost decision-making organ, saw a blend of continuity and renewal as President Yoweri Museveni and Al Hajji Moses Kigongo were returned unopposed as national chairman and first vice chairperson, respectively.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among secured the position of second national vice chairperson (female), taking over from former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga. Other key changes included Calvin Echodu replacing Capt. Mike Mukula as vice chairperson for Eastern Uganda, while Minister Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo clinched the Buganda slot.
In Kampala, businessman Salim Uhuru was elected vice chairperson, whereas Jonard Asiime defeated ICT Minister Chris Baryomunsi to take the Western Uganda seat. Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua was elected vice chairperson for Northern Uganda, while John Baptist Lokii secured the Karamoja slot.
Analysts say the regional reshuffle reflects NRM’s strategy to tighten grassroots structures ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The conference also elected new league leaders to represent different party constituencies. They include:
Historical League: Col. (Rtd) Tom Butiime
Workers League: Arinaitwe Rwakajara
PWDs League: Shafik Mwanje
Elders League: Businge Penina Kabingani
Veterans League: Lt. (Rtd) Moses Mushabe
Women’s League: Adrine Kobusinge
In his message, President Museveni urged the new leadership to uphold the NRM’s legacy of stability and development. Party officials described the outcome as a blend of “tested cadres and youthful entrants,” pointing to both continuity and renewal.
With the new CEC in place, the NRM says it will now focus on consolidating its structures, mobilising support, and preparing for the 2026 elections, where it seeks to extend its four-decade dominance.
