Government has launched E-Bus Xpress (EBX), a new electric public transport service set to operate across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA), marking a significant step toward modernising urban mobility in Uganda.
The service, powered by locally manufactured electric buses from Kiira Motors Corporation, is expected to deliver a cleaner, more efficient, and better organised transport system for the capital.
Officials say the introduction of EBX signals a shift toward sustainable mobility solutions, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while addressing long-standing challenges in Kampala’s public transport sector, including congestion and emissions.
The inaugural routes will run from City Square through Nakawa, Ntinda, Bukoto, Kamwokya, and Wandegeya, before looping back to the city centre.
A reverse route covering the same areas has also been introduced to ensure seamless connectivity for commuters.
Government described the rollout as a milestone in Uganda’s urban development agenda, highlighting the role of home-grown innovation in driving national transformation.
The electric buses, manufactured locally, underscore efforts to build domestic industrial capacity while promoting environmentally friendly transport alternatives.
Authorities have expressed optimism that the new service will not only improve daily commutes but also set the pace for future investments in smart and sustainable transport systems across the country.
