President Museveni has called on Buganda’s cultural institutions to stand firm in safeguarding Uganda’s traditional values, as he presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Lwattamu Mall also known as the House of Battaka in Mengo on Friday.
Hosted by Buganda Kingdom officials, clan elders, and members of the royal lineage, the President used the occasion to affirm the continued relevance of the Bataka (elders), Balangila (princes), and Bambeja (princesses) in shaping the country’s identity and unity.
“In our struggles against Amin and Obote, the Bataka, Balangila, and Bambeja rallied behind us,” Museveni said, underscoring the integral role Buganda played in Uganda’s liberation history.
Positioned on prime Buganda Kingdom land, the Lwattamu Mall project is more than just a commercial complex—it represents a growing synergy between cultural heritage and economic development. Once completed, it is expected to energize trade and community initiatives in central Kampala.
Beyond the bricks and mortar, however, Museveni’s message was deeply cultural. He encouraged clan leaders and custodians of tradition to invest in preserving the essence of Ugandan identity.
“Clans are fundamental to our nation and promote unity,” he said. “We must preserve our languages, our food, our lineage and work with religious leaders to counter the modern erosion of indigenous culture.”
The President particularly lauded the Balangila and Bambeja for their commitment to uplifting their communities.
As a gesture of support, he pledged a personal contribution of shs100 million to the Bukesa Abalangila n’Abambeja SACCO, aimed at expanding income-generating ventures among royals.
The ceremony brought together cultural leaders, business stakeholders, and local residents an indication of how traditional structures are finding new relevance in Uganda’s modern development agenda.
The Lwattamu Mall, once completed, will not only serve as a business hub but also stand as a testament to the power of cultural institutions when empowered to drive progress from within.
