The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi has said plans are underway to make it mandatory for ICT graduates to first do internship at the government owned Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) in Nakawa before being employed.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of 268 students on Friday, Baryomunsi said this plan is part of efforts by government to build the country’s capacity in terms of ICT.

“We are going to put in more resources so we can even turn it into the equivalent of LDC. It will mean that those who want to work in the field of ICT, even if you have qualified from university, you first go through orientation and additional internship training through this institute in order for you to be a certified and qualified IT specialist,”Baryomunsi said.

He noted that the UICT has a great role to play in the country’s digital transformation agenda that  aims to empower the public in using digital tools for their daily activities.

“The ICT landscape is all about how we leverage technology to solve real-world problems, to enhance lives, and to drive economic growth. Institutions like UICT play a critical role in nurturing the minds that will shape the future of Uganda.”

The minister said government is ready to support UICT in all ways to ensure it realizes its potential.

The Ministry of ICT Permanent Secretary, Dr.Aminah Zawedde could not agree more with Minister Baryomunsi’s comments.

She said,” My ministry is committing to strengthen the national ICT skills base through certification and  ICT training institutions including turning UICT into a center of excellence and a certification centre for ICT practioners. This transformation of UICT into an ICT center of Excellence will support all ICT sector needs in Uganda by addressing the ICT solution gaps, skills retooling and provision of market driven professional short courses.”

268 graduate

During the ceremony, 268 students were awarded with diplomas and certificates in various fields.

The UICT Principal, Dr. Fredrick E. Kitoogo told the graduates that having attained knowledge and skills , they should use them to impact society.

“The world today is driven by technology, and the proficiency you’ve gained in this institution positions you as catalysts of change. Your proficiency in Computer Science, Electronics and Engineering, Information Technology, Product Development, Software Engineering, Fourth Industrial Revolution Technologies, Cybersecurity, and other cutting-edge technologies empowers you to carve paths that lead to groundbreaking advancements,”Dr.Kitoogo said.

“Beyond technical skills, UICT has instilled in you the spirit of inquiry and the importance of research. Research is the cornerstone of progress, the bedrock upon which innovation thrives. Your contributions to the field of ICT research will not only push boundaries but also unravel new possibilities that we have yet to imagine. Use your skills not just for personal success but also to effect positive change in society. Empower communities, bridge gaps, and innovate for the betterment of humanity.”
