At least six people were injured on Monday morning in a road crash involving motorcycles in the convoy escorting National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu to Jinja for his manifesto launch.
The accident occurred along the Kalagi–Kayunga Road at around 11:30 AM near Namyoya Village, when one motorcycle reportedly traveling at high speed collided with a vehicle from behind, sparking a chain reaction of multiple motorcycle crashes.
According to police, a white Mitsubishi vehicle, registration number UAZ 064H, displaying images of the NUP aspirant, later rammed into the wreckage of the motorcycles.
Those injured in the crash were identified as Bashir Kewanza(27), Bashir Kakaire (35), Musa Ssepereza (40), Michael Kisomba (28), Eric Ssewaya (23), and Robert Mutagubya (24).
Police said the victims, mostly motorcycle riders and passengers, were rushed to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital for treatment.
Police have since towed three motorcycles and the Mitsubishi vehicle to Naggalama Police Station for inspection.
In a statement, the Force attributed the crash to reckless riding and driving, warning political camps against endangering road users.
“Initial investigations point to reckless riding and driving as the cause. Irresponsible road use as demonstrated in this unfortunate incident that caused multiple injuries will not be tolerated,” police said.
Authorities further revealed that earlier in the day, campaign boards featuring Kyagulanyi’s photos had been placed in the middle of the road, obstructing traffic.
“We reiterate a strong warning to all political actors and their entourages to comply fully with traffic laws. The Police will enforce strict measures to prevent such conduct and ensure adherence to the law,” the statement added.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
