President Museveni has boasted that Uganda is experiencing its longest period of sustained peace in centuries, attributing the achievement to the efforts of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.
“Everybody had failed to bring peace to Uganda. I could say for the last 500 years. We all know what was happening before colonialism, during colonialism, and after. It was bloodshed all the time. But since 2006, when we defeated Kony and ADF, the whole country is in peace,” he said.
Museveni was speaking to journalists from Lango sub-region at Baralegi State Lodge in Otuke district.
He said that the peace ushered into the country has been the springboard for the rapid development being experienced.
“On side of development we have worked on roads. There is electricity everywhere, even in Baralegi here, Patong, Kalong and Abim. You can see that for yourself. If you are honest and not envious, you know the economy of Uganda and recovery it has got is because of NRM.”
He also boasted of his and NRM’s “clear ideology” that he said have ensured the country is moving in the right direction.
“The idea of everyone getting out of poverty is NRM ideology. When you see PDM and Entandika among others, are all due to our ideology of prosperity for all .None of the governments had ever tried that.”
“Therefore, the NRM is the only party which can ensure stability. Because of the ideology and historical contribution of the NRM, I don’t see how the people would fail to see NRM is the right choice.”
Museveni has moved his campaign trail to West Nile where he is expected to canvass votes for his NRM government for the next five years.
In his campaign message, he says having ensured peace and now that there is development, it is high time Ugandans focused on wealth creation.
“Even if there is a tarmac road in your area or a school, are you going to sleep at school or road at night? You will go back to your own house and you will find the poverty you left in the morning waiting for you .It will tell you we are still here as you left us in the morning.We should know that development belongs to all of us but wealth is yours as an individual and so is poverty .The tarmac road is ours(as a community) but poverty is yours(as an individual).”
“That’s why from the beginning, we have been telling you that we were aware of development but it is wealth creation for you. Unfortunately, some people haven’t yet got this message and it is why we still have poverty in Uganda. There is confusion of not creating wealth and waiting for development .Even with a murram road you can create wealth, don’t wait for tarmac.”
