Police in Kyotera District have arrested a man accused of extorting money from job seekers under the guise of helping them secure positions as Special Police Constables (SPCs).
The suspect, identified as Mike Amwine, was allegedly soliciting shs 50,000 from each applicant, claiming he could guarantee their recruitment as polling constables in the ongoing SPC enlistment exercise.
According to ASP Twaha Kasirye, the Regional Police Spokesperson for Greater Masaka, Amwine was arrested following complaints from several victims who reported the scam to police.
“Our police in Kyotera have arrested one Amwine Mike on charges of obtaining money under false pretences and personation. He was found soliciting money from unsuspecting applicants seeking to join the Special Police Constables, allegedly demanding shs50,000 from each applicant, promising smooth entry as polling constables,” Kasirye said.
He cautioned the public against falling prey to such scams, emphasizing that the recruitment process for SPCs is strictly based on merit and free of charge.
“The recruitment process for Special Police Constables is purely merit-based. No applicant should ever be asked to pay money to secure a position,” Kasirye stressed.
He further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or cases of extortion to the nearest police station.
