The MP for Older Persons in Eastern Uganda, Ofwono Opondo, has dismissed reports that mobile phones belonging to Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among were confiscated during ongoing investigations at her homes.
In a post shared on X, Opondo said claims circulating on social media and in sections of the media were false.
“I say without any fear of contradiction, contrary to media reports, that no mobile telephone handset was withdrawn from Anita Among. Visitors have access to her home on Malcolm Road, Nakasero,” Opondo posted.
His statement comes amid ongoing searches by investigators at Among’s residences and her office at parliament as part of a wider probe into her wealth and property.
Investigations into corruption allegations linked to Among reportedly intensified after public scrutiny over her newly acquired Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a luxury vehicle estimated to cost about Shs3.4 billion.
The car attracted widespread public attention, prompting questions from both President Museveni Museveni and the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba over the source of her wealth amid ongoing corruption allegations linked to Parliament.
This has since attracted investigations into Among’s illicit wealth accumulation and corruption with security raiding several of her homes in Kampala and Bukedea where several posh cars were impounded.
Among recently released a statement announcing she had withdrawn from the speakership race and said she would instead support the candidate endorsed by the ruling NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC).
Her withdrawal came shortly after the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), associated with Gen Muhoozi, endorsed former Defence minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the Speakership race.
The endorsement was publicly announced by PLU Secretary General David Kabanda.
Parliament is expected to vote for the Speaker of the 12th Parliament on Monday, May 25, with attention now turning to possible contenders including Norbert Mao and Jacob Oboth-Oboth.
