In a major boost to Uganda’s clean mobility movement, Zembo Uganda, the country’s leading electric motorcycle company, has entered into a strategic partnership with Tugende Limited, a social enterprise specializing in asset finance for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The partnership positions Zembo as Tugende’s exclusive electric motorcycle partner, significantly expanding access to affordable, zero-emission transport for boda boda riders across Uganda’s urban and peri-urban centers.
The collaboration goes beyond simply replacing petrol with batteries—it aims to tackle the high operating costs and environmental impact of conventional motorcycles, empowering riders to earn more while supporting Uganda’s transition to sustainable transport. Under the agreement, the two companies plan to finance and deploy hundreds of Zembo’s electric motorcycles in the coming months.
Riders will benefit from Tugende’s flexible financing options and value-added services, combined with Zembo’s extensive battery-swap network, ensuring minimal downtime and substantial savings.
“We have witnessed the dedication and daily hustle of the boda community, and they deserve tools that deliver real returns,” said James Obarowski, Chief Executive Officer of Zembo. “This partnership with Tugende is pivotal. They understand asset financing better than anyone, and we understand electric bikes. Riders are already excited when they realize they can save up to 40% on operating costs while increasing their daily earnings.”
For Tugende, this alliance marks a milestone entry into sustainable mobility, building on its 13-year legacy of empowering over 80,000 entrepreneurs. Integrating Zembo’s electric motorcycles into its financing portfolio, Tugende aims to accelerate Uganda’s e-mobility shift while aligning with national goals for cleaner and more efficient transport.
“Electric mobility is not a trend; it is the future our riders need,” said Patrick Asiimwe, Country Manager for Tugende Uganda. “We have financed entrepreneurial dreams for years, and we’re excited to offer clients access to reliable and innovative electric assets through Zembo.”
Michael Wilkerson, CEO of Tugende, said the partnership will make electric motorcycles a common sight on Ugandan roads.
“Teaming with Zembo allows us to offer sensible packages—low upfront costs, quick approvals, and dependable bikes,” Wilkerson said. “This is a win for riders’ finances, Uganda’s air quality, and the communities we serve.”
The rollout begins immediately in Kampala, with planned expansion to Masaka, Jinja, and Entebbe, and nationwide coverage expected by mid-2026. Early adopters are already taking advantage of Tugende’s affordable loans and Zembo’s locally assembled battery cabinet technology, the first of its kind in Africa.
Founded in 2018, Zembo has deployed over 1,000 electric motorcycles and built a robust charging network that has reduced emissions and improved riders’ livelihoods.
Tugende, established in 2012, operates in Uganda and Kenya, redefining asset financing through technology-driven leasing, financial literacy, and the first-ever medical insurance package for boda boda riders in Uganda.
Together, the two companies are paving the way for a cleaner, more inclusive transport future in East Africa.
