President Yoweri Museveni has expressed condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan.
Ameir died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at about 8am while receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar, according to Tanzanian officials. He was later buried in Kizimkazi, in South Unguja Region, following Islamic funeral rites.
In a condolence message to his Tanzanian counterpart, President Museveni described the death of Suluhu’s husband as a painful loss.
“It was with a lot of sadness, that I received the bad news of the death of your dear husband, Mr. Hafidh Hassan,” Museveni said.
He extended condolences on behalf of the people of Uganda, his family and himself to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.
“I extend the most heartfelt condolences from the brother people of Uganda and from my family and myself, to your Excellency, your family and the people of Tanzania,” he said.
Museveni also reflected on his relationship with President Samia, saying he had witnessed her commitment to Tanzania and the wider African continent since her time as vice president and later as president.
“Ever since I started knowing you as Vice-President of the United Republic of Tanzania and now as President, I have witnessed your love for your country and Africa and your dedication,” he said.
The Ugandan president cited several areas in which Uganda and Tanzania have worked together, including trade, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, infrastructure and energy projects.
“We have done a lot together in the areas of trade, the East African Oil Pipeline, the Murongo-Kyikagate mini-hydro station, the tarmac roads on the side of Tanzania, the transmission-line from Masaka-Bukoba, the SGR to Isaka and, eventually, to Uganda and beyond, to mention just some,” Museveni said.
He said President Samia’s commitment to public service was likely supported by her husband and family.
“The dedication you show must have been supported by your dear husband and family. I have met your son, Mr. Abdul, a few times,” Museveni said.
“It must, therefore, be a great loss to you. I pray that the Almighty God sees you through these dark days. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he added.
