The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for Kampala Region, Salim Uhuru, has cautioned opposition politicians against de-campaigning government programs, warning that such actions could alienate them from voters.
“If you see the programmes that have come out well like the Parish Development Model and you do an assessment, you will see it has an impact on the society. So, if you come out to de-campaign such a programme that has touched someone down there who is getting a shs1 million capital start-up, I think you will not do anything other than the community coming out and saying they are behind President Museveni and the NRM at large,” Uhuru said.
He was on Monday speaking in an interview with journalists in Serere district as President Museveni campaigned.
National Unity Platform presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine last month took a swipe at government over the Parish Development Model, a program he said he would abolish if he ascends to power.
“A country doesn’t develop by simply giving handouts to everyone. We are going to abolish that program and half of that money will be invested in improving our education system,” Kyagulanyi told supporters recently.
“Museveni has put Shs1 trillion into PDM, but no one can point at how that money has improved anyone’s livelihood.”
However, according to the NRM vice chairperson for Kampala, such comments will see voters shun opposition politicians.
Uhuru also commented about the ongoing campaigns, noting that despite moving smoothly, there have been issued that the public has pointed out and need tobe rectified.
“So far, the NRM is doing extremely well, that is for sure. However, there have been some challenges that the community has come out officially to talk about, for example, the issue of the roads,” Uhuru said.
“Everyone has come out on the issue of the roads, of which at least there is work being done. The works are done, however, they are a bit slow, but the community so far, this is a testimony to show you they still believe in the NRM.”
He predicted the NRM to win the upcoming election with at least 70% of the total vote.
