Former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has been officially declared unopposed as the Member of Parliament representing Older Persons for Uganda’s Eastern Region, following the withdrawal of a legal challenge by his Democratic Party (DP) rival, Joram Mpande Kigenyi.
The announcement came after the Electoral Commission Tribunal reviewed a petition that had been filed to contest Opondo’s nomination.
In a post shared on X, Opondo explained that the decision was the result of his opponent conceding the petition, which alleged forgery in his nomination documents.
“Today my opponent Mpande Joram Kigenyi-DP candidate conceded my petition to the Electoral Commission Tribunal chaired by Chairperson Justice Simon Mugyenyi Byamukama over forgery in nomination documents and I was declared unopposed MP Older Persons Eastern Region,” he wrote.
The ruling guarantees NRM’s Opondo the parliamentary seat representing older persons in Eastern Uganda, a constituency categorized under special interest groups.
This position allows Opondo to directly represent the concerns and interests of senior citizens in the region at the national level.
