Coopil Primary School has experienced a dramatic transformation in Science education following the introduction of new Science Kits in 2023, provided by the Ministry of Education and Sports in partnership with River Flow International.
Previously, teachers struggled to deliver practical lessons due to limited teaching materials, relying heavily on theoretical instruction. Today, classrooms are vibrant hubs of experimentation, curiosity, and active participation.
“The Science Kits have completely changed how we teach. Lessons are now practical, participatory, and enjoyable for the learners,” said Mr. Opiyo Ronald, a teacher at the school.
The kits, distributed to select schools across Gulu District, contain a variety of materials that facilitate hands-on learning. Students conduct experiments on pulley systems, levers, and displacement methods, promoting teamwork, collaboration, and problem-solving—core skills emphasized in the primary Science curriculum.
Practical learning has improved students’ confidence and performance, particularly in answering experimental questions during examinations. “Learners now see, touch, and do experiments themselves. Their understanding has greatly improved,” Mr. Opiyo added.
Despite these gains, some teachers face challenges using certain equipment effectively. Additional refresher training is recommended to maximize the kits’ potential.
Beyond academics, the hands-on lessons have fostered better communication, mutual support, and shared responsibility among students. Coopil Primary’s experience highlights the nationwide shift toward learner-centered Science education, promising a generation of scientifically curious and competent students.
