Uganda is set to host the first-ever Africa Dragon Boat Cup from 1–4 October 2026, officials announced following a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Solomon Muwonge, President of the Uganda Dragon Boat Federation, confirmed the development during discussions with Ambassador Richard Kabonero, Head of Regional Economic Cooperation.
The meeting also included a delegation from the Africa Dragon Boat Federation led by Mr. Ehab Gouda and General Secretary Ms. Mary Lai, who are in Uganda to assess preparations, certify local officials, and inspect potential venues.
Ambassador Kabonero commended the federation for championing the growth of the sport in Uganda, noting that Dragon Boat racing offers both athletic opportunities and diplomatic leverage.
He emphasized that the event will provide “a platform for Ugandans to explore their talent, promote the country globally, and strengthen people-to-people relations.”
Mr. Gouda revealed that the 2026 Africa Dragon Boat Cup will attract over 500 professional athletes from 16 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America.
He added that hundreds of fans are expected to travel to Uganda, alongside millions who will follow the event online.
Dragon Boat racing, a traditional Chinese sport practiced for more than 2,500 years, currently boasts over 50 million players globally—40 million of them in China.
Ms. Mary Lai noted that hosting the event presents Uganda with a significant opportunity to leverage sports for economic visibility.
“By hosting the Africa Dragon Boat Cup in 2026, Uganda has an opportunity to showcase its tourism, investment, and trade potential using sports as a door opener,” she said.
The Africa Dragon Boat Federation is expected to release a full assessment report upon concluding their visit.
