Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 33, bringing an end to a 13-year career with the national team.
Aucho announced his decision on Monday, October 12, 2026, saying he was leaving the Uganda Cranes with “a heart full of gratitude, immense pride and unbreakable love” for his country.
“Today, I officially announce my retirement from international football after an unforgettable 13-year journey representing my country, the Uganda Cranes,” he said.
The defensive midfielder made his international debut on November 30, 2013, and went on to earn 77 caps for Uganda, including the honour of captaining the national team.
During his time with the Cranes, Aucho was part of the squad that ended Uganda’s 38-year wait to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He featured in three AFCON tournaments and had the privilege of leading the national team onto the pitch as captain.
Known for his short passing and commanding presence in midfield, Aucho currently plays for Tanzanian club Singida Black Stars.
Reflecting on his journey, Aucho recalled how, as a young boy working at the Bugembe market abattoir, he dreamed of hearing the Ugandan national anthem played on football’s biggest stages.
“To have achieved that—helping end Uganda’s 38-year wait for Africa Cup of Nations qualification, competing across three AFCON tournaments, and leading my country onto the pitch as captain—is a testament to faith, hard work, and the unwavering support of an entire nation,” he said.
Aucho expressed gratitude to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), his coaches, teammates and Ugandan fans for their support throughout his international career.
He paid special tribute to the fans and several coaches who shaped his journey, including the late Fred Kajoba, Milutin “Micho” Sredojević, Sébastien Desabre, Johnathan McKinstry and Paul Put.
“The fans: the heartbeat of Ugandan football. Your roar at Namboole and support across the country kept us going through every challenge,” Aucho said.
Although he has brought his international career to a close, Aucho reaffirmed his commitment to Ugandan football and pledged to support the next generation of players.
“It is now time for a new generation of heroes to step forward, carry the flag, and write their own history. I look forward to supporting them as one of Uganda’s biggest fans,” he said.
Aucho’s retirement marks the end of an era for the Uganda Cranes, with the experienced midfielder leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership and service to the national team.
