Police in Kampala have arrested a notorious gang that has for months terrorised motorists and passengers along the Northern Bypass, violently snatching phones during peak traffic hours.
According to police, the operation conducted on Friday, December 5, 2025, led to the arrest of 25 suspects, who were caught in the act around the Double Q stretch a hotspot where drivers frequently fall victim due to heavy traffic.
The deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the breakthrough, describing it as a major step in restoring safety on the busy highway.
“The Territorial Police in Kampala Metropolitan would like to inform the public about the successful arrest of a group of criminals who have been violently snatching phones from motorists and passengers along the Northern Bypass, particularly during heavy traffic hours,” SP Owoyesigyire said.
“Eight motorcycles used by the suspects in the commission of these crimes were impounded.”
Police say witnesses have already recorded statements, and investigators have secured video footage clearly capturing the suspects snatching devices from helpless drivers and passengers.
The footage is expected to play a crucial role in the prosecution of the gang members.
All the suspects are currently being held at Nateete Police Division as inquiries continue.
SP Owoyesigyire assured the public that police deployments along the Northern Bypass will be intensified throughout the festive season to deter similar attacks.
“We assure the public that deployments during traffic jam hours will continue, especially as we enter the festive season, to curb this criminal activity and enhance the safety of road users,” he said.
Police further thanked members of the public for their vigilance and cooperation, urging them to continue reporting suspicious activity.
The arrests are expected to bring relief to many motorists who have recently fallen prey to the gang’s violent snatch-and-run tactics.
