Girls have emerged as the strongest performers in English in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), as the subject recorded the best overall results compared to all other papers.
While 1.96% of the female candidates passed in division one in English, only 1.73% of their male counterparts did and in the second grade, 8.68% of the girls passed the same subject, while only 7.79% of the boys.
Still in the English language, 13.08% of the girls passed in grade three while 11.3% of the boys passed in the same grade.
The results also show that 16.12% of the girls passed in credit four while 14.45% passed in the same grade in the English language.
According to UNEB’s performance analysis comparing 2025 and 2024, 10.1% of candidates attained Distinction 2 and above in English, up from 4.9% last year. At Credit 6 and above, 67.6% passed, compared to 58.0% in 2024, while 91.9% attained Grade 8 and above, up from 88.3%.
UNEB said this makes English the best-performed subject in 2025, with girls showing stronger literacy and comprehension skills compared to boys.
Releasing the examination performance at state house in Nakasero, UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo said this has become a norm not only in Uganda but also in other countries weree girls perform better than his in English.
