A total of 91,990 candidates attained Division One (First Grade) in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), marking an improvement from the previous year, according to results released by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).
Out of the 817,883 pupils who sat the examinations nationwide, those who scored first grade accounted for 11.39%, up from 84,301 candidates (10.7%) recorded in 2024.
Presenting the results at State House, Nakasero, UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo said the increase reflects a positive shift in learner performance.
“As the Chairperson indicated, we have more candidates this year passing with first grade. That is 91,990 or 11.39 percent compared to 84,301 or 10.7 percent in 2024,” Odongo said.
UNEB statistics further show that 388,293 candidates passed in Division Two, followed by 165,226 in Division Three, while 84,724 candidates were placed in Division Four.
Odongo noted that although some lower divisions recorded slightly lower percentages compared to 2024, the overall number of candidates who passed increased.
“What is important is that more of our candidates passed in Division One in 2025 than in 2024. This represents an increase of 7,689 candidates in absolute numbers,” he explained.
He emphasized that while percentage comparisons may suggest marginally stronger performance in 2024, the actual numbers provide a clearer picture of progress.
“Overall, although percentages may indicate that 2024 performed slightly better, what matters most is the real number of candidates passing,” Odongo added.
