The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has confiscated 7,970 rolls of substandard toilet paper from Entebbe and Katanga on Binaisa Road in Kampala.
The operation followed complaints from the public about unlabelled toilet paper being sold by street vendors.
UNBS said the investigation led to the arrest of four suspects, who are now detained at Jinja Road Police Station.
“The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has seized 7,970 rolls of substandard toilet paper in Entebbe and Katanga along Binaisa Road, Kampala. This operation followed a consumer complaint about street vendors selling unlabelled toilet paper,” UNBS said.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Standards and Utilities Court to face charges related to selling and possessing substandard products.
UNBS noted that there are clear standards in place to ensure toilet paper sold in Uganda is safe and of good quality.
The bureau also asked the public to report any suspected fake or substandard goods through its toll-free lines.
The crackdown is expected to ease long-standing complaints from Ugandans who have often raised concerns about itchy and poor-quality toilet paper on the market.
Unlabelled toilet paper has flooded the market, often sold at cheaper prices, especially during traffic jams.
