A four- year- old toddler has died , five days after sustaining bans on the lower body when he fell into a saucepan of hot tea in Wakiso.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala told journalists on Monday that the deceased was a middle class pupil at Spotless Kindergarten located in Kawanda-Kivulu, Nabweru Division, Nansana Municipality.
“It is alleged that on April 10, the deceased fell into a saucepan of hot tea and sustained severe burns on the lower part of the body before being rushed to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital,” Kawala said.
The child succumbed to the injuries five days later while receiving treatment.
She said Police have since arrested the school director, Elizabeth Aliku, to assist with investigations on allegations of a negligent act leading to death.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the saucepan of tea had been brought into the classroom, and at the time of the incident, there was no teacher present,” Kawala added.
Police have warned schools to strictly adhere to safety standards, emphasizing the responsibility of institutions to protect learners while in their care.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety practices in early childhood education facilities, with authorities urging school administrators to review and strengthen measures to prevent similar tragedies.
