The once narrow, bumpy, pothole-ridden, and drainage-clogged Bukoto–Kisalosalo Road has now become a source of pride for motorists and nearby businesses following its rehabilitation by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.
The road works were initiated following a directive by Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and are being implemented under the supervision of Lt Col Eng. Robert Chabo, Deputy Commandant of the UPDF Engineering Brigade.
According to 2nd Lt Abraham Kato, an assistant engineer on the project, the rehabilitation covers two sections: one running from Kisaasi Road to the junction of Mukalazi and Kisule Roads, and another extending towards the Northern Bypass.
“The road was in a very poor state. The drainage system was inadequate, with open channels constructed by individual households feeding into a single line. The road had large potholes, making it difficult for vehicles to pass and causing traffic congestion. Pedestrians were forced to share the narrow road with vehicles, which was unsafe. We have addressed these challenges,” he said.

Second Lieutenant Kato commended the community for cooperating well with the engineers working on the road.
Motorists say the rehabilitation has resulted in smoother rides, noting that the road is now a beacon of hope. Many said potholes previously damaged their tyres, while others reported spending long hours navigating traffic caused by the poor road conditions.
Businesses along the road have also reported a rebound following the improvements.
“There was a time when vehicles could not pass here at all because of the potholes. We lost many customers. Each day brought noticeable improvements. I was surprised to leave work on a Friday and return on Monday to find major progress and smooth traffic flow. Customers are back—and even more than before,” said Benita Kyakuwa, a boutique owner.

Hope Tumushabe recalled the challenges caused by poor drainage and clogged channels along Bukoto–Kisalosalo Road, which frequently became a nightmare during the rainy season.
“During the rainy season, there was always severe flooding, forcing water into my house and nearby businesses,” she said.
She noted that the ongoing works have improved drainage, with channels cleared and widened to allow proper water flow.
According to 2nd Lt Kato, the UPDF Engineering Brigade now has the capacity to undertake larger infrastructure projects, crediting President Museveni and Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba for empowering the unit.
