A suspected armed robber was shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday after police patrol officers foiled a gunpoint robbery targeting a couple in Ssemwogerere Zone, Nakawa Division, Kampala District.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the incident occurred at about 12:50 a.m. on June 23, 2026.
Preliminary information indicates that a businessman and his wife were walking along Mukasa Road when they were confronted by three armed men.
“The suspects ordered the couple to stop and lie down, which they complied with. The robbers then proceeded to rob the businessman of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint,” Kawala said.
Police said the suspects subsequently turned their attention to the woman and demanded that she hand over her mobile phone.
However, officers conducting routine motorcycle patrols in the area arrived at the scene before the robbery could continue.
Upon spotting the police officers, the suspects abandoned the attack and fled, leaving behind a bag containing suspected stolen property and a rifle.
Police immediately pursued the fleeing suspects. During the operation, one unidentified male suspect, believed to be about 25 years old, was put out of action.
Officers recovered several exhibits, including an SAR rifle, a bayonet, four smartphones suspected to be stolen, two black shaving machines, three black jackets, one spent cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes, and a black laptop bag.
The body of the deceased suspect was conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Kawala commended the officers for their swift response, noting that their intervention prevented the robbery from escalating and helped protect the victims.
“We commend our officers for their swift response,” she said.
