In a surprising turn of events, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has shifted his position on the race for Speaker of Parliament, saying members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) will now support whoever President Yoweri Museveni endorses.
Gen Muhoozi had earlier publicly backed Speaker Anita Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa for the top parliamentary positions.
He then directed all PLU-leaning MPs to support these two candidates in the forthcoming rae.
However, in a new post on his X page on Sunday, the PLU leader said the final decision rests with President Museveni.
“In the battle for Speaker of Parliament, all PLU MPs and PLU leaning MPs will vote for whoever the President and Commander-in-Chief endorses. We shall support Mzee’s position,” Gen Muhoozi said.
“Whether Anita or Mao or whoever, the will of Mzee will prevail,” he added.
The latest remarks come amid growing political debate over the Speakership race involving Anita Among and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao.
Gen Muhoozi also took a swipe at the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), saying any decisions that go against President Museveni’s position carry no weight.
“NRM CEC decisions that are against the will of the Chairman are null and void. PLU supports whatever position President Museveni takes and we do not listen to NRM’s CEC,” he said.
On March 11, 2026, Gen Muhoozi had directed all PLU-affiliated MPs to rally behind Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa following the NRM CEC endorsement of the current parliamentary leadership.
Speaker Among later thanked the CDF for the support during preparations for the Gen Muhoozi’s 52nd birthday celebrations and pledged to support his agenda.
But in another fresh twist, Gen Muhoozi has now hinted that PLU could field its own candidate in the race while ruling out support for Norbert Mao because of his Democratic Party ties.
“We have another candidate call him/her the PLU candidate. My big brother Mao is DP. It’s impossible that NRM and PLU will vote for him,” he said.
