President Yoweri Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has promoted six Brigadier Generals to the rank of Major General in a sweeping promotion exercise that saw more than 300 officers elevated across the military.

The officers promoted to the rank of Major General are Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Brig Gen Chris Musinguzi Bagonza, Brig Gen Michael Nyarwa, Brig Gen Richard Karemire, Brig Gen David Robert Gonyi, and Acting Maj Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, whose appointment has now been confirmed in the substantive rank of Major General.

The promotions are part of a wider exercise in which President Museveni elevated 301 General, Senior, and Junior Officers across the UPDF.

In addition, 83 officers serving in acting capacities were confirmed in their substantive ranks, while the probationary ranks of 89 Second Lieutenants were confirmed as Lieutenants.

According to the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col. Chris Magezi, the promotions are intended to strengthen the leadership structure of the UPDF.

“These promotions and confirmations strengthen leadership across all levels of the Force and ensure continuity in fulfilling the UPDF’s constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Uganda,” Col. Magezi said in a statement.

He added that the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, together with the UPDF, congratulates all the promoted and confirmed officers on their elevation, describing the exercise as a key step toward enhancing leadership and operational effectiveness within the force.
