Police have explained circumstances under which Kayunga NRM District Chairperson Moses Kalangwa Kaliisa died in a road crash over the weekend.
Police said the accident happened after the driver of the vehicle Kalangwa was travelling in attempted to avoid hitting a boda boda rider and crashed.
According to Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson Michael Kananura, the fatal accident happened on Saturday night at around 9:00pm at Suuka along the Kayunga–Jinja Road in Kayunga District.
Kananura said the crash involved a Toyota Hilux registration number UG 0101 151 and an unidentified motorcycle.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Hilux was travelling from Kayunga towards Jinja. Upon reaching Suuka near Lake Oil Petrol Station, the vehicle collided with an unidentified motorcyclist who was joining the main road,” Kananura said.
Police explained that after the collision, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which overturned several times, leaving occupants with serious injuries.
Kalangwa sustained critical injuries in the crash and was rushed to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital alongside other victims before being referred to Nakasero Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Three passengers were injured in the accident, while the motorcycle rider’s identity had not yet been established by press time.
The death of Kalangwa has shocked political leaders and residents in Kayunga District, where he was widely known as a businessman, farmer and influential NRM mobiliser.
Police said investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.
