The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has commended retiring senior Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) officers for their distinguished service, saying their sacrifice and leadership have laid a firm foundation for the continued transformation of the army.

General Kainerugaba made the remarks at the UPDF Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya during the official retirement ceremony of 222 senior officers, comprising Colonels, Lieutenant Colonels and Majors from Batch 16.

He praised the outgoing officers for their loyalty, discipline and commitment to duty, noting that their contribution had played a significant role in the evolution of the UPDF from a liberation movement into a professional and capable defence force.

“These achievements rest on the foundation laid by committed officers, such as those we honour today.”

Reflecting on the transformation of the UPDF, General Kainerugaba said the force has expanded its capabilities beyond conventional warfare to respond to emerging national and global security challenges.

He said the changing security environment requires the military to remain technologically capable, adaptable and prepared to address threats ranging from terrorism and cybercrime to climate-related disasters.

“From its origin in the liberation struggle, our force has grown into one of the most professional militaries on the African continent. We must continue modernising our force, embracing innovation, strengthening joint operations, and maintaining the highest standards of discipline, accountability and readiness.”

Addressing the retiring officers, General Kainerugaba urged them not to regard retirement as the end of their contribution to Uganda, but as a transition into a new phase of national service.

He encouraged them to use their experience and leadership skills to mentor younger generations, promote peace and contribute to development within their communities.

“I encourage you to see this not as the end of service, but as a new phase in your contributions to the country. Uganda still needs your experience, wisdom and leadership. I urge you to remain ambassadors of patriotism, discipline and the unity of our people.”

The CDF also advised the retirees to manage their retirement benefits carefully and make prudent financial decisions as they transition into civilian life.

“I encourage you to use your retirement benefits wisely, plan carefully, invest prudently and maintain financial discipline.”

General Kainerugaba further recognised the contribution of the Government of Uganda and Commander-in-Chief, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, to the development of a modern and capable defence force.

“Permit me also to recognise the Government of Uganda under the able leadership of His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for its steadfast commitment to building a modern, professional and capable defence force.”

The CDF also paid tribute to the spouses, children and extended families of the retiring officers, acknowledging the sacrifices they made throughout the officers’ military careers.

He noted that military service often involves prolonged separation from family, deployment in difficult environments and a constant requirement to prioritise duty over personal comfort.

“Military service demands uncommon discipline, resilience and sacrifice. It requires long separations from family, service in difficult environments, and a constant readiness to place duty above personal comfort. Today, this honour belongs to them as well.”

The retirement ceremony marked the transition of the 222 officers from active military service to a new chapter in their lives, with the CDF urging them to continue contributing to Uganda’s development through their experience, leadership and commitment to national unity.
