KURA enters Uganda’s asset management market as investment assets surge

KURA Asset Management has entered Uganda’s asset management industry, seeking to tap into growing demand from individuals, families and institutions for professionally managed investments and long-term wealth creation.

The entry comes as Uganda’s investment management industry records significant growth in both assets under management and the number of participating investors.

According to data from the Capital Markets Authority, assets held in Collective Investment Schemes increased from about Shs731 billion in June 2021 to Shs6.02 trillion by March 2026. Over the same period, funded investor accounts rose from about 29,000 to more than 220,000.

More recent data from the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development puts assets held in Collective Investment Schemes at about Shs7.08 trillion as of August 2026.

KURA is entering the market with four main offerings: the KURA Income Fund, KURA Dollar Fund, Private Wealth Management and Family Wealth Planning.

The Income Fund is aimed at investors seeking income and capital preservation, while the Dollar Fund provides exposure to US dollar-denominated investments. The Private Wealth Management offering is designed around individual investment objectives, liquidity requirements and risk profiles.

The Family Wealth Planning service extends the offering to broader wealth-management considerations, including asset protection, estate planning, succession, family governance and the transfer of wealth across generations.

KURA Board Chairman Peter Kabatsi said the increasing range of investment products available to Ugandans also creates a need for investors to better understand which options suit their circumstances.

“Access to investment products does not necessarily mean an investor knows what is appropriate for their circumstances. KURA starts with the client: their goals, risk appetite and long-term objectives, and builds an investment approach around those needs,” Kabatsi said.

“For families, that conversation also extends to how wealth is protected, stewarded and transferred to the next generation.”

The growth of Collective Investment Schemes reflects increasing participation in professionally managed investments, although the industry still has significant room for expansion.

The Capital Markets Authority has set a target of growing funded Collective Investment Scheme accounts to one million.

KURA Chief Executive Officer Ronald Kasolo said the next phase of growth would require greater attention to how investors manage their wealth, rather than simply expanding access to investment products.

“The first stage of this growth has been about getting more Ugandans to invest. The next will increasingly be about how they invest,” Kasolo said.

“As people accumulate wealth, the conversation moves beyond returns to liquidity, diversification, currency exposure and how different investments work together.”

Kasolo brings more than 20 years of experience in asset management, capital markets regulation and pensions. His career includes experience managing investment portfolios exceeding Shs2 trillion.

He previously served as General Manager of Britam Asset Managers Uganda and Country Manager at GenAfrica Asset Managers Uganda, and earlier worked at the Capital Markets Authority and the National Social Security Fund.

The KURA launch was officiated by State Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Development Amos Lugoloobi, while Kenyan businessman and entrepreneur Kiprono Kittony delivered the keynote address.

Kittony is Chairman of Kenya Airways and a former Chairman of the Nairobi Securities Exchange and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He is also a co-founder of Radio Africa Group and has held leadership positions across a number of businesses and industry organisations.

In his address, Kittony highlighted the impact of technology on financial markets, including developments in artificial intelligence, virtual assets, cryptocurrency and tokenised securities.

He called for regulatory frameworks that support financial innovation while addressing emerging risks and strengthening consumer protection.

Kittony also called for deeper integration of African capital markets, including stronger links between markets such as Uganda and Kenya. He said asset managers have a role to play in mobilising African savings and directing capital towards investment opportunities on the continent.

The launch also featured a fireside discussion on wealth creation and succession planning, bringing together entrepreneur Robert Kabonero, lawyer and businessman William Byaruhanga, and Kittony.

The discussion focused on the transition from accumulating assets to building sustainable wealth through professional investment management, sound governance and succession planning.

The launch comes as Uganda’s investment industry increasingly shifts from encouraging people to save and invest towards helping investors preserve, diversify and transfer accumulated wealth.

KURA Asset Management is licensed and regulated by the Uganda Capital Markets Authority.
