A taxi operating within parts of Kampala’s suburbs is at the centre of a police investigation after being linked to a series of alleged robberies targeting passengers.
Accordin to Kira Division police, they are also holding one suspect and have impounded the white taxi, registration number UAW 401G, believed to have been used in multiple incidents along routes between Najeera, Kyebando and the Northern Bypass.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said the case is being treated as part of a wider investigation into passenger-targeted thefts.
“The vehicle is suspected to have been used in a series of robberies within the Kampala Metropolitan Area. We are following up on all leads,” Kawala said.
One of the complainants, a 20-year-old student from Bulabira, told police he boarded the taxi at Najeera Shell fuel station on June 11, 2026, heading to the city centre.
He said the situation changed mid-journey.
“I was told the door was not properly closed and asked to step out. I didn’t suspect anything at the time,” he reportedly told investigators. “When I got out, I realized my phone was gone.”
Police say a similar case had earlier been reported on May 27, 2026, when a female passenger was allegedly robbed of her mobile phone while travelling along the Northern Bypass in Kyebando in the same vehicle.
The breakthrough came on June 12, 2026, when officers spotted the taxi in Namugongo and attempted to stop it.
According to police, the driver sped off, triggering a pursuit that ended with its interception along the Northern Bypass.
“One suspect, Muwonge Isma, a 47-year-old resident of Kyengera, was arrested at the scene,” Kawala said.
Police also recovered a panga and a large stone from the vehicle, which have been retained as exhibits as investigations continue.
