Speaker Anita Among has dismissed claims that she is planning a presidential bid in 2031, stating that she has no ambitions for the country’s top office and intends to retire from active politics by that time.
Speaking during a visit to the offices of the Patriotic League of Uganda ahead of the MK Birthday Run, Among said reports suggesting she is positioning herself for the presidency are false and should be disregarded. She had attended the event to purchase kits worth Shs100 million on behalf of Bukedea Comprehensive School.
“And I want to make this very, very clear today. I have had a section of people out there speaking. I don’t want to call it rubbish, but it is rubbish that Anita Among in 2031 was to stand for presidency,” she said.
Among emphasized that by 2031, she plans to step away from elective politics and instead support a candidate endorsed by President Museveni.
“I want to tell Ugandans, even where I am now, I have overachieved. I do not expect to be there. And I am saying in 2031, I am retiring from active politics. If my brother is standing, or anybody that President Museveni shows me to support, that is the person I will support,” she added.
She maintained that the presidency is not an office she desires, noting that even her current responsibilities as a legislator are demanding.
“This nonsense of saying Anita wants to be president is total nonsense. I am not for that. What I cannot handle—even being a Member of Parliament—is too much. How will you run this country when I can’t even… I don’t even know how to cock a gun. This country still needs people with patience. I don’t have that patience to be president,” she said.
Among also expressed gratitude to Muhoozi Kainerugaba for endorsing her for the Speakership, alongside Thomas Tayebwa for the Deputy Speakership. She said the endorsement carries a responsibility to serve diligently and strengthen public trust.
“We don’t take that for granted. It means that we must work hard to ensure that we build that trust and build the Patriotic League of this country,” she said.
