A one-year-old baby in Wakiso District has died in a suspected case of poisoning after being given an overdose of medicine by a caretaker, police have said.
The incident occurred on the night of April 10, 2026, in Katwe Cell, Nakawuka Parish, Kajjansi Town Council, when the child’s mother reportedly left her at home under the care of her nephew as she went for night duty.
The deceased, identified as Balisala Promise, is said to have been left with the suspect for two consecutive nights prior to the incident.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the suspect later confessed to administering an excessive dose of medicine to the child in an attempt to make her sleep.
“It is alleged that the suspect got frustrated after the child persistently cried and disturbed him at night. He decided to give her an overdose of medicine so she could sleep,” Owoyesigyire said.
However, instead of calming the child, the medicine is believed to have caused her death.
Police say the suspect admitted that he had previously tried the same method to silence the child, but on this particular night, the situation turned fatal.
A case of murder by poisoning has since been opened, and the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Owoyesigyire added that the body of the child has been taken for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
The incident has raised concern among residents over the safety of children left under the care of unprepared caretakers, especially during night hours.
