A police sniffer dog has helped officers in Kasangati arrest three suspects linked to motor vehicle thefts.
The suspects have been identified as Richard Katongole, Amon Matovu, and Peter Musaasizi, and are currently in custody as investigations continue.
According to police, the case stems from an incident that occurred in the early hours of April 10, 2026, at about 3:00am, when unknown individuals reportedly jumped over a fence at the home of a resident identified as Otto N. and vandalised his vehicle, stealing several parts.
“At around 0700 hours, the victim reported the incident at Canan Police Post and requested for canine support,” police said in a statement.
A team of officers, accompanied by a canine unit, responded to the scene, which had been carefully preserved to support investigations.
“Police dog No. T/P 266 Navara was introduced to the scene, successfully picked up a scent, and tracked it for approximately 400 metres,” the statement reads.
The dog led officers to one of the suspects.
“The tracking led officers to Matovu Amon and into a garage, where Katongole Richard was found. Upon questioning, Katongole revealed that the garage belonged to Musaasizi Peter,” police added.
A search conducted at the garage led to the recovery of several suspected stolen vehicle parts.
“A subsequent search of the premises resulted in the recovery of several suspected stolen side mirrors and other motor vehicle parts believed to have been taken from different vehicles,” police said.
Police said efforts are ongoing to identify the rightful owners of the recovered items, as investigations continue.
