Uganda moved top of Group C in the 2024 African Nations Championship with a 2–0 victory over Niger at Nelson Mandela National Stadium on Monday.
Coming into the do-or-die game, the Cranes badly needed to bag all three points to brighten the country’s chances of reaching knockout stages in the tournament for home-based players.
Playing before a lively home crowd at Mandela National Stadium, the Cranes showed composure, grit, and attacking flair.
Allan Okello, once again the heartbeat of the team, drew first blood in the 25th minute.
After his penalty was saved by Niger’s Djibrilla Kassali, the SC Vipers forward reacted fastest, heading in the rebound to send the fans into a frenzy.
Okello was far from done. His vision and quick thinking unlocked Niger’s defense in the second half, setting up Joel Sserunjongi, who curled in a sublime finish to double Uganda’s lead.
While the forwards grabbed the headlines, goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa of BUL FC was the unsung hero at the back, pulling off several key saves to deny Niger any route back into the game.
His commanding display earned him the Man of the Match award.
Unlike in their opening match, where fans left the stadium unhappy with the team’s display, this time they went home with joyful hearts, praising players such as Okello, Mpande, Sserunjongi, Enock Ssebaggala, among others, for their exceptional performance.
The result not only cements Uganda’s place at the summit of Group C but also puts them within touching distance of the knockout stages.
Next, they face a high-stakes battle against CHAN heavyweights South Africa, who earlier defeated Guinea 2-1 in a tense encounter.
With the winning spirit now on high, theCranes now have their eyes set on sealing qualification and perhaps making a deep run in the tournament.
